Crazy People vs. Crazy ArtI wrote a story in collegiate creative writing class that made celebrity whack-job du jour, Cho Seung Hui's plays look like child's play. My short story was based upon a what-if scenario, partially inspired by an actual abduction that occurred in West Valley City, Utah, that I lived through and managed to escape (thanks to my dog.) I was 13 at the time of the traumatic event, and the event still haunted into my college years, even after counseling. The perpetrator was a trusted adult neighbor, and he was never caught, as far as I am aware. Even if the details in the story I wrote were very different, the feelings were very much the same. The words I typed were a sort of intellectual vomiting. It was all I could do, about a situation I could do nothing about, seven years later. It was a tale of serial killer violently and sexually torturing (an adult) female college student who turns the tables on him in the end, and becomes a psychopath in the process. The story included scenes graphically depicting the murder, dismemberment and devouring of three individuals. One of the characters included a flayed war god. This story was so disturbing, three people in my class reported me to my creative writing teacher (who personally disliked me,) and suggested I get a psychiatric evaluation. One of these students told this to my face, and wrote on her evaluation copy that the story was on a "sixth grade level," and "unredeemable." This story was so disturbing, that it was recently banned from the Literotica.com Erotic Story community because it was "unnecessarily" violent. My professor, in spite of his personal issues with me not doing homework and finishing stories because I had to work three jobs, plus a full course load, gave me an "A" and let me know that the piece was innovative and engaging. This encouraged me to submit the story to a student literary magazine. It got published in spite of the violence and disturbing content, because it was, "...good," according to the editor. Thirteen years later, I have an entire website devoted to this type of work. still haven't killed anyone and I have no compelling desire to do so. In fact, I am a pacifist (except in defensive situations,) I believe in a consistent life-ethic person under most circumstances, and for a period I was vegan for moral reasons (and I will probably vegan again when I have enough money to afford leading this lifestyle in a way that will not be detrimental to my health.) My art is not a reflection of who I am necessarily, but of what I see. When I read about this kid's play and people's response to it, I wondered aloud what chilling effects this madness will have upon art. What do we learn from all this? Like weapons, art and not kill people. People kill people -- and evil people do it because they are evil. Do I have any sympathy for Cho Seung Hui? Absolutely not. His heinous acts, are going to make it very hard for outsider artists and writers in the United States, to go about their business. The PMRC/music censorship hysteria in the 80's had a horrendous effect on the arts. I remember how so many people try to scapegoat music and art, for the actions of self-destructive individuals and evil people. I do believe that art can be used as a tool to manipulate others into doing things they would normally not do, as in the case of propaganda and advertising. However, is it really necessary to mandate that any person who expresses unpopular, disgusting, or distasteful ideas in their art, get a psychiatric evaluation? Why should someone who vents his or her thoughts in such a manner, be lumped into the same category as a person whose behavior has consistently demonstrated a lack of regard for the safety and property of others. If Cho Seung Hui, slip through the cracks and became the corpse responsible for the cold-blooded murder of 32 innocent people, it's not because people ignored the "signs" in his writing. Cho Seung Hui slipped through the cracks because Virginia's stalking laws are a laughing stock. Hell, most stalking laws in the United States are a laughing stock. I am not saying that art can't be used as a diagnostic tool, in individuals who are severely disturbed to the point that fantasy and reality are blurred beyond recognition. It should be. However scapegoating is never the answer for complicated questions. We have laws. We need to enforce them them. If the laws are weak, we need to strengthen them. We have excellent ways to prevent individuals who are at risk from being a threat to society at large, especially when the person is so obviously dangerous. So why don't we take care of these individuals, before they become a problem, regardless of race, creed or gender. We need to do something, and I sincerely hope that people don't grasp for easy answers like censorship, scapegoating, or knee-jerk legislation. We in American society, really need to take on the hard look at ourselves. We as a people need to figure out why people like this exist, and we need to face the difficult answers that are in front of us, even if these answers are not popular, or make everyone feel good about themselves. Even if a psychopath or stalker is "cute" and young, we should take him seriously when he is being threatening, before he becomes an actual threat. The only person to blame for this disaster is Cho himself. However, we as a society need to strive to prepare ourselves and know how to protect ourselves in the eventuality of facing a potential threat or harmful situation. Here is my challenge to my government: What are you going to do about people who persistently threaten the well-being of others by violent stalking or continual harassment? Are you going to face up to the fact that this isn't just the problem of a bunch of hysterical feminists, but rather a frightening reality that people have to face, and often with deadly results? If you are not going to step up to the challenge, will you allow us to defend ourselves? 1:27 PM - Thursday, April 19, 2007 - post comment
