Goat

Sergei ignored the tone, “Regardless the sooner we start the sooner we can return home in triumph.”

That did sound reasonable, not to say hopeful, “So you’re going off to flush this creature out and capture it?”

“That’s the plan, and to execute it I’ll be sending out all the staff to improve our chances, which means you had better come with me.”

He didn’t sound very enthusiastic about that notion, and Josephine felt the same way, “I am not going traipsing through the woods searching for some animal, I’ll stay right here thank you very much!”

“Sergei frowned, “Well that is a courageous offer my dear.”

The use of that word set off alarm bells for Josephine, “What do you mean courageous?”

“I mean you will be alone here in the camp and, well you don’t know how to use a weapon do you?” Sergei inquired, with just the faintest hint of sarcasm.

Josephine barely knew which end of a firearm was which, she certainly had no idea how to fire one, “I think under the circumstances I will come with you after all.”

“In that case I’ll be delighted to have your company.” Sergei managed to sound almost sincere.

The forest wasn’t quite the tangled nightmare Josephine had imagined, and there was little sign of any native animal life, which was both a good and bad thing, “Do you have any idea where to find this animal?”

“Oh yes,” Sergei replied quietly, “I have an excellent notion of how to locate it.” As he spoke they entered a clearing that showed signs of something large having trampled the vegetation. He dropped the backpack he was carrying and extracted a heavy looking chain from it. He wound one end around the thick trunk of a local tree equivalent and locked it place with a large clamp before trailing out the rest of it across the clear and attaching a shackle to the free end.

As Sergei went back to the backpack to collect his rifle Josephine looked along the length of chain disdainfully, “You don’t expect this beast just to walk in and chain itself up do you?”

The click and whine of an energy rifle powering up behind her gave Josephine a hint...
